Sometimes a shelter gives us a dog, and within days, it feels like we were handed a bar of gold.
Such was the case with Annabel.
When Annabel arrived, she was a shadow of who she would become—emaciated, her skin raw and red, covered in sores, and nearly hairless. Her eyes were crusted shut, and her breath carried the weight of suffering. But from the very beginning, she radiated grace.
With time, medication, gentle baths, and endless love, her eyes sparkled again. Her skin healed. Her coat came back. Through it all, Annabel was the epitome of resilience. She never complained. She simply trusted. She simply loved.
Last week, her condition took a turn. Her hair began to fall again, her skin flared, and her eyes looked tired. A visit to Burleson and our beloved Dr. Hayes brought new treatments—and also a gentle warning. The weight loss, the recurring skin issues, and advancing dementia were all signs that perhaps it was nearly time.
I wasn’t ready then. But today, Annabel told us she was.
She grew very weak, and in just a couple of days had lost a significant amount of weight. The on-call doctor suspected cancer—silent, unseen in bloodwork, but cruelly present.
It was our honor, our joy, and our privilege to know you, Annabel. You taught us patience, trust, and how to love through the hardest days. You were never just a rescue. You were our treasure.
🌈 Rest easy, sweetest girl.
We’ll see you again at the Rainbow Bridge.
