🚨❄️ IMPORTANT WINTER SAFETY ALERT ❄️🚨

What to Do If You Find a Cold or Hypothermic Cat or Kitten 🐱🆘

Winter weather can be extremely dangerous for outdoor, stray, and feral cats—especially tiny kittens 🐾💔. As temperatures drop, the risk of hypothermia in cats and kittens rises dramatically.

If you ever come across a cat or kitten that is cold, lethargic, unresponsive, or appears frozen, knowing the right steps to take can save their life ❤️‍🩹.

🚫🍽️ DO NOT FEED a Hypothermic Cat or Kitten

This is one of the most critical winter rescue rules.

Do NOT give food or milk
Do NOT force-feed

When an animal is hypothermic, their body is in survival mode 🧊. They do not have the energy needed to digest food. Feeding them too soon can cause:

⚠️ Shock
⚠️ Organ failure
⚠️ Sudden death

Even if they look hungry or haven’t eaten in a long time, food must wait until their body temperature is stabilized by a veterinarian 🏥.

🧊🐾 Signs of Hypothermia in Cats & Kittens

Watch for these danger signs, especially during freezing temperatures:

🥶 Cold body, ears, or paws
😴 Extreme lethargy or weakness
🌬️ Slow or shallow breathing
😶 Unresponsiveness
🧍‍♂️ Stiff or frozen appearance
🦷 Pale gums

⚠️ Kittens are especially at risk because they cannot regulate their body temperature on their own.

✅🐱 What You SHOULD Do Immediately

Act quickly—but gently 💛

🏠 1. Bring Them Out of the Cold

Move the cat or kitten indoors or into a sheltered, draft-free space right away.

🧺 2. Dry Them Completely

If the animal is wet or damp:

  • Gently towel-dry them
  • Remove snow, ice, or moisture

Wet fur increases heat loss and worsens hypothermia ❄️➡️🥶.

🔥 3. Warm Them Slowly

Slow, gradual warming is key ⏳.

✔️ Wrap them in soft blankets or towels
✔️ Use a heating pad on LOW, wrapped in fabric
✔️ Hold them close to your body for gentle warmth 🤍

🚫 Do NOT use hot water
🚫 Do NOT submerge them
🚫 Do NOT apply direct heat

Sudden temperature changes can be extremely dangerous ⚠️.

🏥 4. Get to a Veterinarian Immediately

Hypothermia is a medical emergency 🚑.

Even if the cat or kitten starts to move, purr, or seem “better,” they still need urgent veterinary care. Internal complications may not be visible.
